Big Tech's market dominance may push more investors to equal-weight exchange-traded funds, according to VettaFi's Todd Rosenbluth. Rosenbluth lists the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF and the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Technology ETF as options for investors who want to reduce exposure to the "Magnificent Seven." "You own the same companies that you'd find within the S&P 500 or in the technology sector. But instead of being dominated by Apple and Microsoft and Nvidia, you spread that risk around to the other companies," Rosenbluth said. CNBC's Magnificent 7 Index, which is comprised of Apple, Alphabet, Meta , Microsoft , Amazon , Nvidia and Tesla , soared almost 6% Friday.

Long-term yields might be the best bond investment this year, according to one exchange-traded fund expert. "The iShares 20-year Treasury ETF (TLT ) will get the biggest bang for its buck [and] some of the intermediate-term products like the Vanguard Intermediate-Term Corp Bond (VCIT ) will get some bang for the buck," VettaFi's Todd Rosenbluth told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. Rosenbluth added that while the short-term products were very popular last year, they will "largely tread water or earn a little more than their overall income." The firm's head of research reasons that if the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates more than expected then investors should stay in longer-term products to benefit. "We saw a lot of money start to move out of the short end of the curve into intermediate duration," said Slavin, the company's global head of ETFs.

Cryptocurrency investors spent much of 2023 waiting for good news. By the time news broke on Jan. 10 that 11 new bitcoin ETFs would begin trading, crypto investors were taking a victory lap, having bid the coin's price up by 155% in calendar year 2023. "They don't have the ability to put these bitcoin ETFs into client discretionary portfolios, yet," Sigel says. Expect more new crypto ETFs, too — and in different flavors. Experts say these might be as simple as portfolios that combine bitcoin exposure with mainstream investments, such as those in the S&P 500.

ETFs offer 'the best of both worlds'Year over year, more money has gone into ETFs than mutual funds. ETFs also come with lower average expense ratios, fees investors pay for the management of a fund, Armour said. Mutual fund investors may owe either short- or long-term capital gains on those distributions, depending on how long they have been invested in the fund. Bryan Armour director of passive strategies research for North America at Morningstar"As a fund holder in a mutual fund, you're at the whims of other fund holders," Armour said. "They're much, much more tax-efficient than a mutual fund," Armour said.

Why these three money managers are betting big on AI ETFs
  + stars: | 2023-11-08 | by ( Natalie Zhang | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The number of exchange-traded funds in the artificial intelligence space has exploded in the past year. Big Tech may have led the initial foray into AI, but money managers are now seeing other sectors jump into the space. Global X ETFs manages the Global X Artificial Intelligence and Technology ETF, which looks at the larger AI names in the space and is an option to play the space in a measured way, he said. Another ETF that can give investors exposure to AI beyond traditional tech is the Global X Robotics and Artificial Intelligence ETF , said Maier. One ETF that launched earlier this year aiming to lean into the generative AI theme is the Roundhill Generative AI and Technology ETF.

Oct 27 (Reuters) - Bargain hunting drove investors to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking technology companies after shares fell sharply on mixed earnings from heavyweights. The fund's price fell nearly 4% in the week, as mixed results from megacaps like Alphabet (GOOGL.O) weighed on the sector. Tech funds saw inflows of $2 billion in the week to Wednesday, their largest in eight weeks, according to BofA Global Research, which it attributed to investors "buying the dip". The $14 billion ProShares UltraPro QQQ (TQQQ.O) posted net weekly inflows of $68.15 million, even as the price of the fund fell 9.5%. The $46.5 billion Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund and the $9 billion VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH.O) posted net inflows of $205.7 million and $280.6 million, respectively, for the week.

Oct 2 (Reuters) - VanEck on Monday launched VanEck Ethereum Strategy ETF , becoming one of the first U.S. investment managers to bring a futures-based exchange traded fund (ETF) tied to the world's second-largest cryptocurrency ether to the market. The newly launched fund will be investing in ether futures focused solely on those traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the fund manager said. "EFUT is positioned to gather assets from those investors wanting to tap into this slice of the crypto market." ProShares, Bitwise and Invesco have also filed to list a variety of ETFs tied to ether, that are expected to launch later in the day, according to traders and media reports. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsSept 26 (Reuters) - Approvals on new exchange-traded funds, including bitcoin spot ETFs, could face delays if the U.S. government shuts down next month for the fourth time in a decade. "I'm not sure if ETFs that have been filed for approval can move forward with the government shutdown," said Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi. "This would just delay yet another decision on the never ending spot Bitcoin decision," said Todd Sohn, ETF and technical strategist at Strategas Securities. "ETFs are just pass through vehicles ... impact on the underlying markets will obviously impact ETFs," said Hector McNeil, co-CEO and founder of HANetf. "People will also probably pause if they're about to launch (new ETFs) and wait for steady waters."

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Newly publicly traded company Arm Holdings is poised to be added to popular indexes such as the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, although inclusion in the S&P 500 is unlikely, analysts said. Shares of the British chip designer closed up 24.7% in their Nasdaq debut on Thursday, giving it a market value of $65 billion. “The Nasdaq 100 is the most likely widely followed index for the company to get added into,” said Todd Rosenbluth, Head of Research at VettaFi. However, inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 may take time for Arm shares. Inclusion of Arm shares in the S&P 500, which is the standard benchmark for the U.S. stock market, is far less certain, analysts said.

For those who want to ride the AI rally while still diversifying their portfolio beyond the tech sector, there are other fields benefiting indirectly from the AI craze, two ETF experts say. Baird's head of ETF trading, Rich Lee, and VettaFi's head of research, Todd Rosenbluth, both said there is a wider choice of industries seeing AI gains than investors may initially think. "We're seeing trends towards health care, we're seeing eCommerce companies," Rosenbluth told CNBC's Bob Pisani on "ETF Edge" on Monday. "It's going to help advisors do their jobs better, it's going to help investors sort through information better, it's going to help processing." "So, we're going to see AI creep into other sectors and industries we may not traditionally associate with tech or AI," Lee said.

Beating the benchmark? How AI-driven ETFs stack up

Rosenbluth explained that VettaFi is seeing increased interest in actively managed ETFs that are driven by AI. The QRAFT AI-Enhanced U.S. Large Cap Momentum ETF (AMOM), for example, uses an artificial intelligence system to select large-cap stocks for its portfolio. "AMOM is significantly outperforming the iShares momentum ETF (MTUM) ," he said. The AI-driven AMOM rebalances at the end of every month and is up more than 21% this year, while the benchmark MTUM has remained relatively flat in 2023. "'[Momentum ETFs] should benefit from the information that's continually being updated in the marketplace," Rosenbluth said.

Some investors are shunning Wall Street’s tech frenzy
  + stars: | 2023-07-07 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —While many on Wall Street have chased the monster rally in mega-cap tech stocks this year, exchange-traded fund (ETF) investors seem to be bucking the “all-in on tech stocks” trend and opting for a more diversified strategy. The Nasdaq Composite index has climbed about 31% for the year, powered by a handful of tech stocks that have soared on hype surrounding artificial intelligence. The Vanguard Information Technology Index Fund saw $955 million of net outflows in the first half of 2023 compared to $291 million net inflows in the first half of last year. Investors had piled into tech-focused ETFs last year when the sector had fallen out of favor, betting that tech stocks would recover, buoyed by an economy that remains resilient despite the Federal Reserve’s punishing pace of interest rate hikes. Now, investors are exiting these ETFs and reallocating their cash to quality stocks with strong balance sheets that can withstand a potential economic downturn, says Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi.

NEW YORK, June 21(Reuters) - Individual investors have given a cold shoulder to Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation Fund during their searing run this year, but some market watchers believe that may change if risk appetite keeps improving. The $8 billion fund, which outperformed all U.S. equity funds during the pandemic rally of 2020 but suffered a steep fall last year, is up nearly 37% year-to-date, outpacing broader markets. ARK Invest, the fund's parent company, did not respond to a request for comment. Domestic equity funds and ETFs posted a total of $151.3 billion in outflows year to date through June 7th, according to data from trade group the Investment Company Institute. Optimism among individual investors vaulted to a 19-month high in the latest American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) Sentiment Survey.

REUTERS/Mike BlakeJune 21 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) has returned to the S&P 500 ESG index, the sustainable investing-focused market index, after the electric car maker added environmental disclosures. The re-inclusion of Tesla is largely symbolic because only about $8 billion in assets track the S&P 500 ESG index, a tiny fraction of the $15.6 trillion in assets that track the S&P 500 index, according to its provider, part of S&P Global (SPGI.N). Tesla was among 39 companies added to the S&P 500 ESG index effective May 1 as part of an annual rebalancing. Other companies added included Chevron (CVX.N) and Fox (FOXA.O), while 23 companies were removed including Exxon (XOM.N) and Oracle (ORCL.N). S&P said it has a review underway that "relates to racial discrimination in Tesla factories," which could impact future scores.

Ark Invest's Cathie Wood, known for her investments in next-generation technologies, missed out on the jaw-dropping rally in Nvidia — the biggest winner in artificial intelligence this year. Her flagship Ark Innovation ETF (ARKK) exited Nvidia entirely in early January, before the chipmaker went on to enjoy a powerful rally that propelled it to a $1 trillion market capitalization. She even trimmed Nvidia holdings in her smaller funds on Thursday when the stock spiked 26% on a huge forecast beat driven by AI chip demand. & Robotics ETF (ARKQ) now has 4.4% in Nvidia, while its biggest holding is Tesla with a 14% weighting. In its base case, Ark believes Exact Sciences could compound at an average annual rate of 25%, reaching $140 by 2027.
Rosenbluth said that engagement for precious metal commodity ETFs spiked earlier in May compared with the month prior, according to VettaFi data. "The story is all about gold," Will Rhind, founder and CEO of GraniteShares, said Monday in the same segment. The ongoing banking crisis still looms, higher inflation and a declining dollar are also tail winds for the precious metal, he said. Flows into the SPDR Gold Shares have exceeded $1.14 billion the past month, according to FactSet. The iShares Gold Trust (IAU) and the SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust (GLDM) saw net inflows of $182 million and $222 million, respectfully, in the same period of time.

It appears specific sector ETFs are gaining popularity as a way to cushion bank-turmoil fallout. According to VettaFi's Todd Rosenbluth, the trend applies to ETFs holding only a few large companies in particular industries. "We're seeing this year that active management and actively managed ETFs in particular have been relatively popular in complement to an existing core strategy." Rosenbluth asserts the narrow focus of big-cap sector ETFs can boost potential gains. Yet, last week on "ETF Edge," Astoria Advisors' John Davi suggested bank upheaval could expose problems lurking in ETFs tied to specific sectors.
If you like big banks, there's an ETF for that.

Roundhill Investments launched its new Big Bank ETF (BIGB) on Tuesday in response to the banking crisis. The fund includes no regional banks but holds equally weighted positions in six institutions: Bank of America , Citigroup , Goldman Sachs , JPMorgan Chase , Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo . Comparably, the SPDR S&P Bank ETF (KBE) holds a 0.35% ratio. The launch of the ETF comes as larger banks are increasingly being seen as relative safe havens in the sector, while regional bank stocks remain volatile this week. "With these sector ETFs in general, and more concentrated ETFs, you really want to make sure you want to overweight them."
